South Down MP Eddie McGrady said he was shocked to learn of the sudden death of Michael Cole and has extended his sincere sympathies to his family. “Michael was a well respected and hardworking Councillor for many years. He served with distinction and excelled in his role of Mayor for Newry and Mourne Councillor, undertaking work at a local level for the benefit of the entire community. Michael was an extremely dedicated public representative and focused greatly on raising constituents’ concerns. This was very important to him, along with the work he carried out on a wider level, for the good of the community, especially his efforts in assisting older members of the community as well as local community youth groups.
Michael was also a great stalwart of the GAA and had many friends throughout the Association due to the tremendous amount of time he devoted to the game.
Michael’s input and dedication will be sadly missed by the SDLP and the people of Newry and Mourne”
