Some progress for Ballyhornan Sewage System but not enough
Some progress for Ballyhornan Sewage System but not enough
Following further representations to NI Water requesting a review of their decision not to proceed with the planned sewage treatment facility in Ballyhornan, I have received confirmation that they intend to complete improvements to the current sewage system by April 2010.
Although these measures fall far short of the new treatment facility required at Ballyhornan, they will in the near future provide a screening unit, prior to discharge, at the existing sewer outlet.
NI Water’s plan to site this screening unit on a site that would allow for the future build of a transfer pumping station at this location.
These interim works are the minimal required to be undertaken by NI Water and in the long-term are inadequate. I am disappointed that the required Treatment facility appears to now be completely removed from the future plans of NI Water, and their focus has shifted to the transfer of waste from Ballyhornan to an upgraded treatment works at Ardglass.
While I welcome the screening work to be undertaken this is the minimal necessary and the area requires substantial investment by NI Water and the provision of an adequate treatment works to meet the demands of the area.
Ends.
